Bioethics and the Law: Notes, Cases, and Problems

The purpose of bioethics is to put forth ethically acceptable solutions to the problems posed by modern medicine. The actions of healthcare providers are governed by the four principles of bioethics: autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence, and justice. The principles of bioethics are directly connected to legal mandates. This book is designed to be used to teach a 2 or 3 credit biomedical ethics and law course or seminar. The number of biomedical ethics issues are vast and beyond the scope of this book.

Criminal Procedure: A Free Law School Casebook

This Casebook is designed for the “investigations” criminal procedure class commonly taught at American law schools. It focuses on the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments to the Constitution of the United States. Fourth Amendment topics include definitions of “search” and “seizure,” probable cause, warrants, exceptions to the warrant requirement (e.g., plain view, consent, automobiles), stop & frisk, and arrests. Moving to interrogations, the book covers due process and the voluntariness requirement, the Miranda Rule, and the Massiah doctrine.

Passing the Bar: A Quick Reference Guide For Today’s Law Student

This book is designed to provide guidance to law students as they prepare to embark upon bar study. It covers topics such as how to make a study plan, strategies for successful bar study, tips for attacking each portion of the exam, taking care of your mental health, and preparing your loved ones for bar study. The book also provides weekly tips for use during the bar study period, and for exam day itself. The quick reference format allows students to easily access advice for whatever is most pressing to them at a particular moment.

A Treatise of Wyoming Workers’ Compensation Law

This is the Second Edition of A Treatise of Wyoming Workers’ Compensation Law, which seeks both to introduce Wyoming workers’ compensation students to the law of their own jurisdiction, and to provide a continuing resource to those same students as they embark on workers’ compensation legal practice after graduation. In this way, the text fills a gap in the literature by serving as a concrete exemplar of what it means to assist students in becoming “practice-ready” as soon as possible after graduating from law school.

Judicial Ethics and Conduct

Judicial Ethics and Conduct provides materials that can be used in conjunction with a stand-alone one or two unit course on judicial ethics, or can be used in whole or in part to provide the basis for a sub-unit on judicial ethics within a standard course on legal ethics or lawyer professional responsibility. A heavy emphasis is placed upon the American Bar Association’s Model Code of Judicial Conduct.

Corporate Tax

UPDATE: A revised 2023-2024 edition is in production. CALI anticipates publishing it in mid-September 2023.

The 2022-2023 edition casebook is a basic corporate tax text. It is intended to be suitable for a three-hour law school course. The text is designed to be accessible to law students from widely different backgrounds. However, the material assumes that students already have taken a course in basic income tax. The casebook includes links to numerous CALI tutorials allowing students to assess their knowledge throughout the course.

Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Employment Discrimination

This Chapter will address the current protections that are available to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (“LGBT”) individuals who allege they have been victims of employment discrimination. The Chapter’s primary focus will be on federal statutory law, particularly Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  Although the focus here is on federal law, Appendix I to this Chapter lists the states that protect individuals from public and/or private discrimination under state laws.1

Federal Rules of Evidence

These are the Federal Rules of Evidence (FRE) as effective December 01, 2016. The FRE govern the introduction of evidence in civil and criminal trials in United States federal courts. These Rules are often the foundation for the standard upper level law school course in Evidence.

Distance Learning in Legal Education: Design, Delivery and Recommended Practices

This paper was written as a collaborative project by the Working Group on Distance Education in Legal Education. Contributors included law faculty, administrators, instructional designers, and law school librarians.

The materials are intended to provide law schools and interested parties with a summary of distance learning opportunities, tools, and considerations. The paper presents three fundamental questions and attempts to provide a discussion of each.

1. How should a law school implement distance education?
